Bringing the COP15 From Copenhagen to Home

Get involved to stop global warming

In December, thousands of activists from around the world will take the streets of Copenhagen and demand that our world leaders develop a just and sustainable solution to the global climate crisis.

These actions are planned in response to the United Nations COP15 Climate Change Conference, which will be held from December 7-18. The COP15 will the largest summit ever held to address climate change, bringing together the world’s government and business leaders in an attempt to develop an agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol.

Do you want to get in on the actions but can’t afford a trip to Denmark? Don’t let money deter you from letting your voice be heard. You can still make history without traveling far from home.

Get Visible Locally This Month

Nonviolent direct action events will be staged across the US as early as November. Mobilization for Climate Justice, a coalition of environmentalists, is calling for a countrywide day of action on November 30. On this day, activists in several US cities will display signs, join in chants and participate in educational events. To learn more about N30 and find an event in your region, visit http://www.actforclimatejustice.org/.

If there aren’t any events posted nearby, the website includes tips on how to organize your own day of action.

Petition the Policy Makers

Don’t stop after November 30. Our policy makers must be reminded that the world is listening to the COP15 discussions. One quick way to send a clear message to the decision makers is to pen them a letter. Fortunately, organizations like Greenpeace, Avaaz and 350.org make this task easy by providing prewritten letters on their websites. To ensure that your letter is read, it’s recommended that activists include a personal story or note.

Utilize Social Networking Sites

Your Facebook and Twitter accounts are valuable tools for sharing COP15 action information. If you hear about an N30 event or sign onto a petition, create a note about it in Facebook and share it within your network. If you attend an event, create a Twitter account and adjust your settings so that you can send tweets via your mobile phone throughout the day of action.
